Drawings in NYC Subway - part 01

  • I travel with New York subway, and transfer between different lines during different time every single day. It is a long commute so I would draw on location. I took it as a time to quiet myself in this crowded city. Sometimes, it is in early morning, sometimes, it is after midnight. Therefore, I would run into same type of people in the same time frame or on the same area. However, among the same type of people, there are different culture background in them. These images below are some selection from the past five years of commuting.
  • This scene is often seen in the early morning or midnight around Manhattan, esepecially Time Square. People get drunk and just collapsed on subway bench.
  • I remember this guy was passed out and his eyes were open. Nobody wanted to stay in the same area with him, but I stayed in front of him and kept drawing. I wished somebody was there and had taken a picture on this weird scene.
  • Homeless people is one of my favorite to draw. Each of them seems so vulnerable and real.
  • people have lots of ways to sleep on subway.

  • Infants or children is the smartest creature in subway, because they seem to be the only person who really notice what I was doing. They are keen observers. Also, drawing them makes me feel very peaceful.
  • Ladies wearing interesting outfit or their posture draws my attention, too.
  • This lady came in the train and totally at ease. Very elegant.

  • Couples' interaction is interesting also.
  • men usually sit still and play with their phones.
  • Elderly is fun to observe because they seems to know a lot about life just by sitting the way they sit, act the way they act.
