This show centers on 3 types of objects: fruit, compressed wood and house plants. These objects represent the three aspects of Human reality: our mastery of nature, the creation of civilization and a return to and mastery of nature.
In the Christian creation myth the apple represents temptation, the unobtainable golden fruit of the gods. It is the potential to exceed our normal capabilities. We were once like ants or fish, we existed and had individual quirks but as a whole we were living under the demands of nature. We were given commands (such as go catch a fish) and our individual characteristics led us to eventually go down a path towards getting that fish. Adam eating the apple represents us removing ourselves from that loop of control and saying: NO I'm going to eat that fucking apple and I’m going to plant these seeds and grow my own apples and build a house from the trees and then I’m going to take one of these trees and put it in my dining room so I can look at it when eat the apples I grew. By removing ourselves from the wills of nature we gained agency and free will: consciousness.
At first we were ingrained in the natural cycle. By settling down and farming we stepped outside of nature’s intent of hunting/gathering and began producing our own food. With artificial selection through farming we exceeded the capabilities of evolution. Then by taking wood and building houses, towns, cities and countries we ended up creating civilization, a parallel version of the circle of life.
Nature acts as a cosmic axis linking the functions of animals, plants, weather, etc, keeping everything in balance. It is largely seen nowadays as an escape or a form of recreation, but there is still that pull. We get relief from being in nature and have figured out ways to simulate this feeling, House Plants. They are perfect little mass produced living objects that serve little other purpose than to add some atmosphere to a room. We have come full circle back to the realization that we are still part of nature, but theres no going back from here.
Photography has reached this point and lost a lot of its original purpose. For a photograph to truly be original you must remove the objects pictured from heir original setting and take complete control of them. Reality can be repurposed and shaped into whatever form is desired.
