최은주: Eunju Choi : 崔銀珠 (aka. MOON)

  •     My name is Eunju Choi: 최은주 : 崔銀珠.  In my country Korea, every letter of a name have meanings behind it. My name means the best silver glowing marble ball. What is a best glowing silver ball in the world? I can say it is the moon. (Silver is symbolic of clarity, purity, and brilliance. The moon also symbolizes theses things.) Every night I look at the sky, I see myself in the moon. Just like the moon reflects the sunlight to glow, various feelings and emotions reflect from the moon.
I have been photograph moon from April 2013, and I am continuously photographing the full moon every month from August 2014 to now on. This is my life long series. The moon means so much to me, as a woman, a foreigner, being alone, and an artist. I came alone to United States at the age of 14. I was all alone in new environment: even the air was very cold and scary. Being alone at a young age was not easy. When I missed my family, I always looked up the sky and saw the moon. Everywhere I go, the moon is always there. Looking at the moon, I communicated with my family who are 6,961 miles away.
Not only because my name symbolizes the moon, but also my physical and mental state are related to the moon. Just like the story of full moon and werewolf, the relationship between the moon and myself gets stronger at the full moon. At late night, there is no one near me either I hear no human sound, winds and silence. I am usually very tired, dull, powerless and dreary but, on the full moon day, I feel little different. I feel powerful, existence, active, and fullness. The full moon symbolizes power, the peak of clarity, fullness and obtainment of desire.
The moon has exemplified the feminine spirit, particularly female intuition and emotions. The moon became full once every month. The full moon has more significant meanings to many other cultures and also to me. The moon is a timekeeper. From very earlier time, the moon was examined as a lunar calendar in many cultures. Some cultures considered the moon as the heavenly place where all souls go. Moon has been paramount symbols of many cultures and moon is deeply related to our life. Like we can not live without the sun, we can not live without the moon. The moon is very essential to the earth and us.
