Takashi Murakami is an internationally prolific contemporary Japanese artist who is known for blurring the line between high and low arts. Murakami's work is commonly misunderstood as expression of happiness because of his use of colorful and kawaii illustrations when they're actually inspired by and dedicated to the hard times Japan has suffered through since post WW2 all the way up to the recent tsunami. "Looking Up When You're Down" is a book that tells this exact story. I split up the book into two books (happy side/sad side) carefully contrasting the two sides utilizing the typography, content, layout style and color in order to tell this story. Enjoy!
