Seungkyung Oh Art statement
Through image interventions of collage and paint, I intend to create a new two dimensional world that also alludes to infinite space . All things can exist in this world in either a natural or surreal state. I use found and collaged items like features such as eyes, noses, and mouths. These all retain their actual photographic appearance but are transformed into a bizarre format—such as an animal with human eyes and mouth, or a hyena that is taking a walk with a person. I truly enjoy making everyday objects into bizarre experiences, and bizarre objects into everyday experiences.
The stories that I usually tell are in fact made up of real-life objets, but they make up a fictional world that exists as a metaphor that shares parallels with the one we experience.
I usually gather images from the web, magazines, and newspapers. I also take snapshots of everyday life with a camera. Those pictures gradually disintegrate into single images removed from their context, and ultimately completely separated from the actual event that they originated from. The process of my image making then refers to these common universal experiences, but reconstructs them into otherworldly events.
Deviation from normalcy can be made by a small combination and movements. Those deviations merely invoke a faint smile, tears, or questions. Collage and paint application unify on the surface of the the painting and synthesize the image. This process is the driving force behind my process.
